By now you have probably read far too many articles claiming that in as little as 3 months, you can learn a new language (including Spanish) and invested your time on them just to find that they are scandals and scams. Spanish isn’t known to be a ‘difficult’ language for English native speakers to learn, like Czech or Japanese is. With this in mind and considering how popular the Spanish language is, meaning there are so many resources out there to help you learn, I have found that it really is possible to become reasonably fluent in as little as 3 months, and that is why I have written this article. Spanish is not the closest language to English in terms of similarity, but it is still considered that English speakers will not have much trouble learning the language.

What does Fluent mean?

Being as competent with a language as a native speaker is a common misconception that most people have for the meaning of the word ‘fluency’. The actual meaning is more like to simply be able to express yourself without much difficult and keep conversation flowing with ease. This is very important because you no longer have to learn the same vocabulary of someone who has spoken the language their entire life, because that will obviously be too much to ask of yourself and will take years to get even close to.

Becoming fluent in Spanish can be much easier than you might think. It can be as simple as just learning the basic words and sentence structure (mainly words like “the”, “and”, “this” etc) so you can build your own basic sentences and just swap and change a few words in them depending on the situation. In English for example, learning the phrase “Where is the….” Would be a great starting point because then you just have to add the word you are talking about on the end. This can be used over and over again in many situations. Variations for the endings of these sentences can easily be learned as you expand your vocabulary.

e.g.
“May I have an apple?”

“May I have directions?”

How to Learn Spanish Fast

When considering how to learn Spanish fast, choosing the most effective use of your time is a key factor. I have found that most classes tend to concentrate on teaching things you would barely ever use in conversation, like the different parts of the human anatomy or in some instances different parts of a motorcycle! What would be the point of a vocabulary that is based on random topics which rarely come into day to day life?

It is much more beneficial to become proficient with the basics of Spanish, because you can use these basics over and over again and then just build on them as your vocabulary increases, giving you the confidence to talk about a larger range of topics.

When you do speak Spanish you should try to avoid giving one answers such as “yes” or “no” when someone asks you a question, because this is a mistake most people do which causes them to panic and mumble out quick, short answers. Try to use general phrases like “It would be nice, but…” or “I’d like to think that…” to elaborate on your answers. Using these techniques you will get you using more words, giving you more practice in real life situations so your confidence in Spanish will sky rocket! People you talk to will also get more of a polite impression of you which is always good as well.

Put the time in

In order to persevere to fluency in a quick time, some time should be spent every day to make the techniques discussed in this article worthwhile. For these methods of learning to work effectively you definitely need to have a passion for learning this new language to stick with it every day.
